History of Elk Grove CA
Elk Grove is a city in Sacramento County California located just south of the state capital of Sacramento. It became part of the Sacramento Arden Arcade Roseville Metropolitan Area. The 2nd largest city in Sacramento County, Elk Grove was once the fastest growing city in the United States.
Elk Grove was founded in 1850 as a stage pick up tourists originating from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, when the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop was opened by James Hall and the city was subsequently called after the hotel.
Elk Grove areas consist of Pleasant Grove Estates, Sheldon Heights, Bradshaw Ranch Estates, The Shires, Sheldon Woods, Sunburst Solar Ranchette, River Oak Estates, Laguna and much more.
The Elk Grove Unified School District is the 5th largest school area in California and one of the fastest increasing school districts in the country. It is located in southern Sacramento County. Those students participate in thirty eight grade schools, 8 intermediate schools, eight high schools and four alternative high schools.
There are also numerous independent schools in the area. A local community college, Cosumnes River College, provides both occupation training and a transfer program to four year colleges. Located close-by are California State University, Sacramento and the University of California, Davis, in addition to St. Mary’s College. Elk Grove is also the home of the personal six-year Universalist spiritual college Quest Academy. California Northstate University College of Pharmacy moved to Elk Grove near Interstate 5.
The new Elk Grove Public Library is located at 8900 Elk Grove Blvd in a modern 2 story structure. It moved to this area from just a block East. The library becomes part of the wider Sacramento Public Library system. The Elk Grove Library also serves surrounding communities such as Vineyard, Wilton, Sloughhouse, and Rancho Murieta. Additional local libraries supplement communities, such as the public Franklin High Library.
Elk Grove is serviced by a fared bus system called e-Tran that incorporates a number of the city’s main thoroughfares.
The Elk Grove Regional Park is the largest park in the area with it’s famous Pirates Island. Smaller parks include Morse Park and Camden Park.
